Ever wished that there was an organization devoted to the preservation and protection of American Sign Language as a distinct and cherished language? Your wish is coming true.
A new organization, the Society of ASL Guardians, is in the preliminary planning stage. Its mission is to preserve, protect, and safeguard the purity and beauty of authentic ASL. A lexicographic committee, consisting of native users and teachers, will determine which signs are to be considered acceptable ASL usage, and will issue a definitive dictionary.
A conference will be held later this year or the next to plot a course of action. A homepage has been set up at http://www.societyofaslguardians.org. Check there for updates and membership information.
